If you look at Snapchat or Instagram for iOS, they can also control the style of the status bar in real-time. Swipe from Camera to Messages. It turns white if the background is dark, and it turns black when the background is light.

Yes, when I added this to previous prototypes the UX Researchers loved it and users didn't know 100% is was a prototype.
